Biosecurity

Biosecurity can be described as the exclusion, eradication and effective management of pests and unwanted organisms into New Zealand as these may harm New Zealand’s economic, environmental and social interests.   For agricultural and horticulture there are many exotic species which would have a devastating effect on the industries if they became established in New Zealand.   Vigilance in managing such risks is critical to the industries, at the pre border, border and post border levels.   On farm strategies and awareness tools are important to ensure rapid responses to any incursions.   Such tools can be included within a Sustainable Management framework, with the sector identifying those species which present risks to the sector.   Responsibility for Biosecurity at a national level is with MAF under the Biosecurity Act.   A Biosecurity Strategy has been developed by the Biosecurity Council to provide an overall framework for biosecurity in NZ.
